Chapter 17 - The Letter from Vanessa

|
The mail arrived on a rainy Thursday afternoon.
Among the bills and catalogs was a plain, white envelope with no return address, only a postmark from a neighboring state.
I opened it carefully, recognizing the neat, precise handwriting immediately. It was from Vanessa Reed.
I sat at the kitchen table, watching Owen play with building blocks on the rug, and read the letter.
Nora,
I am writing this through my therapist. I do not expect a reply, and I will not contact you again.
I spent years believing that Marcus’s contempt for you proved you were weak and unstable. I now understand that his contempt was simply the tool he used to justify taking what he wanted from people. He did the exact same thing to me the moment I became inconvenient to his legal strategy.
I am responsible for accepting his narrative because it made me feel important and gave me permission to behave cruelly. I am responsible for approaching you in that courtroom, for the things I said, and for the harm I caused.
I am deeply, truly sorry.
Vanessa.
I read the letter twice, letting the words sink in.
I didn't feel a sudden rush of forgiveness, nor did I feel a lingering urge for revenge. I simply felt a quiet acknowledgment of the truth.
Vanessa’s apology mattered because it finally contained genuine responsibility, stripped of excuses or justifications. She wasn't asking for absolution, and she wasn't demanding a relationship. She was simply owning her part in the destruction.
I folded the letter, placed it inside a file folder in my desk drawer, and closed it.
I didn't write back. I didn't need to.
I walked over to the rug and sat down next to Owen, helping him balance a particularly tricky red block on top of his tower.
"Careful, buddy," I smiled. "It needs a strong foundation."
May you like
Owen giggled, successfully placing the block. "It's strong, Mommy!"
"Yes, it is," I agreed, kissing his cheek.
