Chapter 38 - The Rehearsal Dinner

|
The rehearsal dinner for Owen and Maya’s wedding was held in a beautiful, rustic barn transformed by thousands of fairy lights and vibrant wildflowers.
The room was filled with laughter, clinking glasses, and the overlapping conversations of two large, loving families merging together.
When it was time for toasts, I stood up, holding a glass of champagne. The room quieted down, all eyes turning toward me.
I looked at Owen, sitting beside Maya, holding her hand under the table.
"When Owen was very young, I spent a lot of time worrying about what kind of world I had brought him into," I began, my voice steady and clear, carrying easily across the large room. "I worried about the shadows he might have to fight, and the legacies he might be forced to carry."
I paused, catching Dana’s eye in the crowd. She raised her glass to me in a silent salute.
"But what I didn't realize then," I continued, turning my gaze back to my son, "is that children are not simply the product of the battles their parents fight. They are the architects of their own peace."
I looked at Maya, offering her a warm, welcoming smile.
"Owen, you have built a magnificent life. You chose a partner who challenges you, respects you, and loves you as an equal. You did not inherit fear; you inherited resilience. And Maya, thank you for loving my son exactly as he deserves to be loved—freely, honestly, and fiercely."
I raised my glass high.
"To Owen and Maya. May your home always be a sanctuary, and may your love always be louder than the dark."
The room erupted into applause and cheers. Owen stood up, walking over to pull me into a massive, crushing hug.
"That was perfect, Mom," he whispered in my ear.

"You are perfect," I replied, kissing his cheek.
I looked around the beautiful, joyous room. Marcus was not there. He had not been invited, and his absence was not a tragedy; it was a profound, victorious relief. We were celebrating the future, entirely unburdened by the past.
