Chapter 7 - What the Safe Concealed

I picked the lock to Everett’s private study using a simple tension tool I kept on my keychain—a lingering habit from my field days investigating corporate espionage. The heavy oak door glided open without a sound.
The office was immaculate, smelling of expensive leather and polished brass. On the wall behind his mahogany desk hung a large framed portrait of Everett shaking hands with the state governor.
I stepped behind the desk and tilted the picture frame forward. Just as I suspected, a heavy steel digital safe was embedded directly into the wall stud.
A man like Everett Vance, consumed by narcissism and vanity, would never choose a complex, randomized passkey. I tried his birthdate first—incorrect. I tried his college graduation year—incorrect. Then I typed in his wedding date to Clara: 0-6-1-4.
The electronic mechanism clicked, and the heavy steel door swung open.
Inside lay the dark heart of the Vance family operation.
I pulled out a thick leather folder labeled Post-Delivery Estate Reorganization. As I flipped through the pages under the dim beam of my penlight, my jaw tightened.
It was far worse than Clara had described.
There were pre-drafted petitions for emergency psychiatric containment, signed in advance by a corrupt physician affiliated with Celeste’s hospital board. There was an asset transfer agreement liquidating Clara’s $4 million trust fund directly into Vance Family Holdings. But the most chilling document was a draft press release:
“The Vance family tragically announces that Clara Vance is suffering from severe post-partum psychosis and has voluntarily relinquished all parental rights to protect her child...”

They weren't just stealing her money and her child; they were planning to erase her entirely the moment she gave birth.
I pulled out my phone and began photographing every single page, ensuring the document footers, metadata timestamps, and signature lines were perfectly legible.
