Chapter 20 - Shadows on the Horizon

|

The attorney turned without another word, descending the porch steps and sliding back into the sleek black sedan. The car accelerated smoothly down the quiet suburban street, its taillights fading into the gathering dusk.

I picked up the heavy embossed business card. As I flipped it over, my heart dropped into my stomach.

On the back of the card, written in dark, precise ink, was a handwritten message:

“Rose has her father’s eyes. See you soon, Marian.”

My breath hitched. They were watching us. Despite the convictions, despite the prison sentences, the vast, shadowy web of the Vance family’s global wealth was still active, reaching out from the darkness to threaten my family once again.

I stood up from the porch chair, my hands trembling slightly as I pulled out my phone. I dialed Detective Ortiz’s direct line instantly.

“Sam,” I said the moment he answered. “We have a problem.”

“What is it, Marian?” Ortiz asked, his tone instantly becoming alert.

I looked down the quiet street, where the shadow of the black sedan had disappeared into the night. Across the neighborhood, I could see the warm yellow lights shining from Clara’s cottage, where my daughter was currently tucking little Rose into bed, completely unaware of the storm gathering on the horizon.

I took a deep, steadying breath, my eyes hardening into steel once more. The battle was far from over. The predators were coming back, but they were about to learn that a mother’s protection never expires.

“Get your team ready, Sam,” I whispered into the receiver, staring into the dark street. “They think they can play another game. It’s time we teach them how it ends.”
