Chapter 12 - Captured on Their Own Wire

Everett’s eyes darted wildly around the room, looking for an escape route, but two state troopers stepped up to block the front doors.
“This is a setup!” Warren yelled, pointing a trembling finger at me. “She broke into our home! She fabricated this entire story!”
Detective Ortiz gestured toward the tech unit officers who were carrying black equipment cases into the house.
“We don't just have audio, Mr. Vance,” Ortiz said. “Mrs. Cole was kind enough to point out your internal security network. Our cyber forensics team has already accessed your cloud server under an emergency federal warrant.”
Everett gasped, his hands dropping to his sides.
“Your own hidden cameras captured everything,” Ortiz continued, pulling up a tablet screen. “We have high-definition video of you dragging your pregnant wife up the stairs by her legs two nights ago. We have footage of your mother hiding her vitamins. We have video of you locking her in her bedroom.”
“No...” Everett whispered, stepping backward until his back hit the wall. “No, that was... that was for her own protection!”
Dr. Lydia Mercer stepped forward, her face dark with professional disgust as she looked at Celeste.
“I’ve already suspended the medical license of Dr. Harrison—the physician you paid off to draft those false psychiatric papers, Celeste,” Dr. Mercer said sternly. “The hospital board will be holding an emergency meeting at noon to revoke your position permanently.”
Celeste sank down onto the bottom step of the staircase, her silk suit wrinkling, her aristocratic composure entirely shattered. She looked up at me, her eyes filled with a mixture of terror and pure hatred.
“You ruined us,” Celeste whispered.

I walked over to her, stopping just two feet away. I leaned down slightly so only she could hear me.
“No, Celeste,” I whispered softly. “You ruined yourselves. I just audited the damage.”
