Chapter 2 - Beneath the Silk

Dinner was an exercise in psychological warfare. Celeste talked endlessly about the private preschool she had already selected for the baby, completely ignoring Clara’s quiet attempts to speak. Warren made snide remarks about my late husband’s modest pension, while Everett poured wine for everyone except Clara, whom he treated like an fragile invalid incapable of holding a glass.
When the meal finally ended, Clara excused herself, claiming she was exhausted.
“I’ll help her get settled upstairs,” I said, standing up from the dining table.
Everett’s hand shot out, grabbing his napkin a bit too tightly. “That won’t be necessary, Marian. The housekeeper can check on her. Clara needs quiet, not emotional lingering.”
“I am her mother, Everett,” I said, keeping my tone perfectly level, devoid of anger. “I think I can carry a glass of water upstairs without disturbing the peace.”
Celeste gave a tight, exasperated sigh. “Oh, let her go, Everett. Simple mothers have their simple rituals.”
I carried a glass of water and a bottle of prenatal vitamins up the carpeted stairs. The upper hallway was silent, lit only by soft wall sconces. I opened the door to Clara’s bedroom and found her curled into a tight ball on the king-sized bed, silently weeping.
“Clara, sweetheart, what is it?” I whispered, setting the glass on the nightstand and sitting beside her.
“I’m just tired, Mom. Please, just go home tomorrow,” she sobbed softly.
“You’re shivering,” I said.
I reached down to pull the heavy silk blanket over her legs. As I lifted the fabric, Clara gasped and tried to pull away, but it was too late. The soft light from the bedside lamp illuminated her pale skin.
Across her thighs and calves were deep, mottled bruises—dark purple and sickly yellow marks that looked like the imprint of heavy fingers and brutal pressure.

My blood turned to liquid ice. The quiet, gentle mother in sensible shoes vanished in a fraction of a second.
“Who did this to you?” I asked, my voice dropping to a dangerous whisper.
