Chapter 14 - Handcuffs and Headlines

By 11:00 AM, the Vance estate had transformed into a full-scale crime scene search. Federal agents and state police were wheeling out filing cabinets, desktop computers, and boxes of seized documents from Warren and Everett’s offices.
Everett Vance was led out the front doors in handcuffs, a jacket thrown over his head to hide his face from the local news crews that had already swarmed the wrought-iron gates.
Warren Vance was placed into the back of a separate police cruiser, charged with conspiracy to commit grand larceny and witness tampering.
Celeste Vance was escorted out shortly after, refusing to look at the flashing cameras as reporters shouted questions through the bars of the perimeter fence:
“Is it true you tried to steal your daughter-in-law’s trust fund?!”
“How involved were you in the medical cover-up, Mrs. Vance?!”
State Attorney Julian Reeve stood on the front lawn, holding a short press conference for the gathering media.
“Today, law enforcement disrupted a severe and sophisticated network of domestic abuse, financial exploitation, and medical coercion operating inside this estate,” Julian announced into the microphones. “We will be prosecuting everyone involved to the fullest extent of the law. Wealth will not shield criminals in this state.”
I stood near my old sedan, watching the Vance empire crumble into dust in less than three hours. Nora Vale walked over, handing me a cup of warm coffee from her car.
“The judge just signed an emergency temporary protective order, Marian,” Nora said with a triumphant smile. “Everett, Warren, and Celeste are barred from coming within one thousand feet of Clara or the baby. Their assets have been frozen pending a full financial audit.”
I took a sip of the coffee, feeling the deep, bone-weary exhaustion finally catch up with me.

“How long until the trial?” I asked.
“Months,” Nora replied. “But as of today... Clara is free.”
