Chapter 11 - Playing the Tape

|

The silence in the grand foyer was deafening. Everett looked back and forth between State Attorney Reeve and me, his arrogance finally cracking around the edges.

“Forensic Auditor?” Everett stammered, his voice losing its smooth polish. “She’s... she’s just a widow from Raleigh. She doesn't do anything!”

“Mrs. Cole spent twenty-eight years sending men much smarter than you to federal penitentiaries, Mr. Vance,” Detective Ortiz said coolly. He pulled a digital audio player from his coat pocket and tapped the screen.

Suddenly, Everett’s own voice echoed loudly through the high-ceilinged room, amplified by the officer's speaker:

“Clara is unstable... Tomorrow morning at ten, she is going to sign the administrative transfer for her father’s trust, as well as a voluntary custody delegation...”

Then came Warren’s booming laugh:

“We control the narrative here... Who do you think the courts will believe? A prestigious family with unlimited resources, or a hysterical girl...”

And finally, Celeste’s cold, calculated voice:

“Clara is simply an incubator for the next Vance heir. Once the baby is born, we will handle her medical care in a private facility...”

Celeste’s face went completely ghostly white. Her hand flew to her throat as if she were suffocating. Warren stumbled backward, catching himself against the mahogany handrail of the staircase.

“That... that audio is illegal!” Everett shrieked, panic breaking his voice. “She recorded us without our consent! It’s inadmissible!”

Nora Vale stepped forward, pulling a legal document from her briefcase with absolute triumph.

“In this state, Mr. Vance, one-party consent applies when recording evidence of an active violent felony,” Nora said smoothly. “And thanks to your mother’s explicit threats of forced medical containment, every second of this recording is 100% legal, certified, and currently being reviewed by a grand jury.”
