Chapter 13 - A Voice from the Stairs

|

A soft sound at the top of the landing drew everyone’s attention upward.

Clara stood at the head of the stairs. She was wearing a simple blue dress, holding the wooden banister tightly with one hand while her other arm cradled her round belly. She looked pale, but for the first time in three years, her head was held high.

Everett immediately tried to run toward the stairs, his face twisting into a desperate mask of fake affection.

“Clara! Sweetheart!” Everett pleaded, tears suddenly welling in his eyes. “Tell them! Tell them your mother is crazy! Tell them I love you!”

Detective Ortiz instantly stepped in front of Everett, grabbing his shoulder and slamming him back against the wall. “Stay where you are, sir!”

Clara slowly walked down the marble steps, her footfalls firm and steady. She didn't look at Warren, nor did she look at Celeste cowering on the stairs. She walked straight up to Everett, looking him dead in the eye.

“You told me no one would ever believe me,” Clara said, her voice shaking slightly at first, then growing stronger with every word. “You told me I was nothing without your family’s money.”

“Clara, please, think of our child!” Everett begged, his hands handcuffed behind his back by a state trooper.

“I am thinking of her,” Clara said clearly, tears spilling over her eyelashes, though her expression remained unbreakable. “For the last time in my life, Everett... I am protecting my daughter from you.”

She turned to Dr. Mercer and Detective Ortiz. “I am ready to leave now.”

Two female officers immediately surrounded Clara, shielding her with their bodies as they led her out into the bright morning sunlight toward a waiting medical transport.

As Clara passed me at the doorway, she paused. She took my hand, squeezing it with all the strength she possessed.

“Thank you, Mom,” she whispered.

“I’ll be right behind you, baby,” I replied softly.
