Chapter 15 - The First Breath of Freedom

Two months later, the maternity wing of Raleigh Memorial Hospital was silent, save for the soft beep of a heart monitor and the gentle hum of the air conditioner. Sunlight poured through the large glass window, painting the room in warm shades of gold.
Clara lay in the hospital bed, holding a tiny, swaddled bundle against her chest.
The baby had a mop of dark hair, rosy cheeks, and tiny fingers that curled tightly around Clara’s thumb. There were no Vance security guards at the door. There were no lawyers waiting with paperwork. There were no cameras hidden in the corners.
I sat in the armchair beside the bed, watching my daughter look at her child with an intensity of pure, unadulterated love.
“She’s perfect, Mom,” Clara whispered, a tear running down her cheek and landing softly on the baby’s blanket.
“She looks just like you when you were born,” I said softly, reaching out to stroke the baby’s velvety cheek. “What are you going to name her?”
Clara looked up at me, a brilliant, radiant smile breaking across her face.
“Rose Marian Cole,” Clara said proudly. “No Vance in her name. Just us.”
My breath hitched in my chest, and for the first time in months, I felt my own tears escape. I wiped them away quickly with the back of my hand, laughing softly.
A gentle knock sounded at the door, and Dr. Lydia Mercer stepped inside, holding a clipboard.

“Mother and baby are both in perfect health,” Dr. Mercer announced warmly. “And I brought a little legal update from Nora Vale. The divorce was officially granted this morning. Full legal and physical custody of Rose belongs entirely to Clara.”
Clara closed her eyes, letting out a long, shuddering sigh of relief. The heavy weight that had crushed her chest for three years had finally vanished completely.
