Chapter 4 - The Shadow of Who I Was

|

I stepped out into the quiet hallway and pulled the bedroom door shut with a gentle click. Standing in the soft lighting of the Vance mansion, I took a deep, deliberate breath, letting the instinct of my past life wash over me.

To the Vance family, I was Marian Cole: a harmless sixty-two-year-old widow who wore cardigans, grew hydrangeas, and clipped coupons in a small house outside Raleigh. They saw my grey hair and modest clothes and assumed I was a relic of a simpler world.

They didn't know about the twenty-eight years I spent as a senior forensic accountant for the federal government and state task forces.

Before I retired, my job was dismantling monsters who wore expensive suits. I specialized in high-level financial fraud, corporate embezzlement, asset concealment, and estate hijacking. I spent nearly three decades going toe-to-toe with corrupt politicians, cartel bankers, and sociopathic billionaires who thought their wealth placed them above the law. I had sent men far more powerful than Warren Vance to federal prison, armed with nothing more than spreadsheets, paper trails, and unyielding patience.

I knew how ruthless people operated. They always left receipts because their arrogance convinced them no one would ever dare to look.

Everett Vance thought he was playing a game of chess against a broken girl and her helpless mother. He didn't realize he had just invited a master auditor into his criminal crime scene.

Rage was a useless emotion right now. Rage made people loud and careless. What Clara needed wasn't a shouting match in a marble foyer; she needed a ironclad case that would utterly obliterate the Vance family before they even saw the blow coming.

I adjusted my cardigan, smoothed my skirt, and put my mild, timid smile back on my face. Then, I walked down the grand staircase to meet my enemies.
