As Claire's firm took on the massive Sterling project, she realized she could no longer operate as a solo consultant. She needed a partner, someone who understood both design and the complex logistics of corporate restructuring.
She posted a quiet listing through her professional network.
After weeks of disappointing interviews with arrogant architects who wanted to dominate her vision, she sat across from a woman named Maya.
Maya was sharp, fiercely intelligent, and possessed a quiet, unshakeable confidence. She reviewed Claire’s portfolio with a critical, respectful eye.
"You focus heavily on the psychological impact of space," Maya noted, tapping a rendering of the new hotel atrium. "You design for emotional flow, not just aesthetic appeal."
"I believe the spaces we inhabit dictate how we interact," Claire explained. "If a room is designed to intimidate, the people in it will act defensively."
Maya nodded slowly, understanding perfectly.
"I spent ten years designing corporate offices for tech startups," Maya said, leaning forward. "They wanted ping-pong tables and neon walls to mask the fact that they were working their employees to death. I want to build spaces that are actually honest."
Claire looked at the woman across from her. She didn't want a subordinate; she wanted an equal.
"I don't need someone to manage my schedule, Maya," Claire said firmly. "I need someone to challenge my blueprints."
Maya smiled, a predatory, brilliant expression.
"I can definitely do that."
