Chapter 21 - The Spring Bloom

|
Spring arrived, thawing the city and bringing a renewed sense of energy to Claire's work.
She was standing in the lobby of a newly renovated Vanguard property, admiring the sleek, modern lines and the warm, inviting atmosphere she had designed.
The hotel manager, a young woman named Sarah, approached her with a bright smile.
"It looks incredible, Claire. The guests are already raving about the open concept."
"I'm glad," Claire smiled. "It flows much better now."
"The regional directors are flying in tomorrow for the grand reopening," Sarah added nervously. "Including Mr. Mercer."
Claire’s smile didn't falter.
"I know. I'll be here for the presentation."
The next morning, the lobby was filled with executives, local politicians, and press.
Claire stood near the back, watching the ceremony.
Daniel was standing near the front, looking sharp and professional. He caught her eye across the room and offered a small, respectful nod.
Claire nodded back.
When the speeches concluded, the crowd dispersed for a catered luncheon in the adjoining ballroom.
Claire didn't follow them. She had managed enough luncheons for one lifetime.
She walked out the front doors, stepping into the bright spring sunshine.
Her phone buzzed in her pocket.
It was Nora.
Did you survive the grand reopening?
I did, Claire texted back. I didn't even check to see if the caterers brought enough sparkling water.
Growth, Nora replied instantly. Are we still on for drinks tonight?
May you like
Absolutely.
Claire put her phone away and took a deep breath of the fresh air. The heavy, suffocating weight of the Mercer legacy was completely gone. She was just Claire.
