The Vanguard boardroom was smaller and less intimidating than the Mercer suite, but the stakes felt remarkably similar.

Claire stood at the head of the table, clicking through a digital presentation of the proposed lobby redesign for their flagship property.

She spoke with a confidence that surprised her. She wasn't just managing the aesthetics; she was dictating the flow of the space, prioritizing function and warmth over sterile luxury.

"The removal of the central partition allows for a more integrated guest experience," Claire explained, pointing to the rendering. "It stops the space from feeling like a waiting room and turns it into a destination."

The board members nodded, taking notes.

The door opened quietly at the back of the room.

Daniel slipped in, taking a seat in the back row. He wore a sharp grey suit, looking rested but older.

He watched her intently.

Claire didn't falter. She finished her presentation, answered questions with crisp authority, and gathered her materials.

As the board members filed out for a short break before Daniel’s financial review, he walked up to the front.

"The presentation was excellent," Daniel said, his tone professional but carrying a hint of the old, familiar pride he used to reserve for his own achievements. "The open concept is exactly what that property needs."

"Thank you," Claire said, sliding her tablet into her bag.

"You seem... very comfortable up there."

"I know the material."

"You always did." He hesitated. "You just never used to present it yourself."

"I was busy making sure the projector worked and everyone had water," she replied evenly.

Daniel looked down, acknowledging the hit.

"I miss your insight," he said quietly.

"You miss my management," Claire corrected.

"I miss you," he corrected back, looking up.

Claire zipped her bag shut.
