Chapter 23 - The Unforeseen Crisis

|
Late July brought a suffocating heatwave and an unexpected crisis.
Claire was at the Vanguard office, reviewing final budget approvals, when her phone rang with a frantic tone.
It was Daniel.
"Claire, I need your help," he sounded breathless, panic edging his usually smooth voice.
"Daniel, what's wrong?"
"It's Rebecca. She's been in an accident."
Claire stood up instantly, her heart hammering.
"Where is she? Is she okay?"
"She's at St. Luke's. A drunk driver ran a red light. She’s in surgery now."
"I'm on my way."
Claire didn't hesitate. She didn't weigh the boundaries or the history. In that moment, the corporate maneuvering and the bitter divorce vanished. Rebecca was family, regardless of the legal documents.
She arrived at the hospital twenty minutes later.
Daniel was pacing the waiting room, looking disheveled and terrified.
Evelyn was sitting in a plastic chair, staring blankly at the wall, her hands trembling violently.
Claire walked directly to Evelyn, kneeling in front of her.
"Evelyn," Claire said softly, taking the older woman's shaking hands in hers.
Evelyn looked at her, her eyes wide with raw, unadulterated fear.
"She's in surgery," Evelyn whispered, her voice breaking. "They won't tell us anything."
"They are working on her," Claire said, her voice steady, an anchor in the storm. "We just have to wait."
Daniel stopped pacing and stood near them, looking entirely lost.
"I didn't know who else to call," Daniel admitted, his voice thick with guilt.

"You called the right person," Claire assured him, not out of love, but out of basic human decency.
For the next six hours, Claire didn't manage the room. She didn't organize the updates or fetch coffee. She simply sat with them, holding the space, enduring the terrifying silence of the waiting room together.
