Chapter 25 - The Shift

Rebecca’s recovery was slow and painful, requiring months of physical therapy.
She moved into Evelyn’s townhouse temporarily, as it was more accessible than her own multi-level home.
Claire visited twice a week, bringing magazines, coffee, and quiet company.
She was sitting in Evelyn’s sunroom one afternoon, helping Rebecca with some simple stretching exercises.
Evelyn was sitting nearby, reading a novel.
"You are pushing too hard, Rebecca," Evelyn noted, not looking up from her book.
"I'm not pushing hard enough, Mother," Rebecca grunted, wincing slightly. "I need to get back to work."
"The work will survive without you," Evelyn said softly.
Rebecca stopped stretching, looking at her mother in shock.
Claire paused, also surprised by the statement.
"Did you just say the work will survive without me?" Rebecca asked, incredulous.
Evelyn finally looked up, closing her book.
"I almost lost you to a drunk driver in an intersection," Evelyn said, her voice surprisingly vulnerable. "The firm, the shares, the legacy... none of it matters if you aren't here to argue with me about it."
Rebecca stared at her mother, tears welling in her eyes.
"Mom..."
"Do your stretches," Evelyn ordered gently, her voice thick with emotion. "But don't break yourself trying to prove you are invincible."
Claire watched the exchange, feeling a profound sense of awe.
The Mercer women, who had spent decades masking their fear with aggressive competence, were finally learning how to be fragile together.

It was a messy, imperfect process, but it was genuine.
Claire quietly packed up her bag, leaving them to their rare moment of unfiltered honesty. She walked out of the townhouse, realizing that the family she had once tried so desperately to hold together was finally learning how to hold themselves.
