Chapter 24 - The Recovery Room

|
The surgeon finally emerged just after midnight.
He looked exhausted but offered a reassuring nod.
"She's stable," the surgeon announced. "She has a fractured pelvis, two broken ribs, and a severe concussion. But the internal bleeding has been stopped. She is going to recover."
Evelyn let out a long, shuddering gasp, covering her face with her hands.
Daniel collapsed into a nearby chair, burying his head in his knees.
Claire felt a massive weight lift from her chest.
"Can we see her?" Evelyn asked, her voice trembling.
"She is in the ICU," the surgeon replied. "Only one person at a time, for five minutes."
Evelyn looked at Daniel.
"You go first," Daniel said, his voice muffled.
Evelyn stood up, her posture rigid, masking her profound relief with forced composure. She followed the nurse down the hallway.
Claire sat next to Daniel in the waiting room.
They were silent for a long time.
"I thought we lost her," Daniel whispered, staring at the linoleum floor.
"I know."
"When the hospital called... I felt like the entire world was collapsing again."
"It didn't," Claire said softly. "She's safe."
Daniel looked at her, his eyes red and exhausted.
"Why did you come, Claire? After everything I did. After everything we put you through."
Claire looked back at him, feeling a deep, quiet certainty.
"Because she's Rebecca," Claire answered simply. "And because I don't need to punish you anymore, Daniel. The anger doesn't serve me."
Daniel swallowed hard, nodding slowly.
"Thank you."

"You're welcome."
It wasn't a reconciliation of their marriage, but it was a profound reconciliation of their shared humanity. The bitter war was finally, truly over.
