Chapter 33 - The Ghost in the Lobby

|

Walking into the Mercer Grand—now officially renamed The Sterling Pinnacle—was a surreal experience.

Claire arrived wearing a sharp grey suit, carrying a leather portfolio. She stood in the massive, opulent lobby, remembering the countless charity galas, the stressful board meetings, the forced smiles she had worn in this exact space.

It felt like walking through a museum dedicated to a life she no longer lived.

Sterling and his executive team met her near the grand staircase.

"Ms. Ward, thank you for coming," Sterling greeted her, shaking her hand firmly. "As you can see, the bones are good, but the design is completely outdated."

"It’s heavy," Claire agreed, looking up at the massive, oppressive crystal chandeliers. "It's designed to intimidate, not to welcome."

"Exactly. What is your initial thought?"

Claire spent the next two hours walking the executives through the space. She didn't hold back. She critiqued the flow, the lighting, the archaic color palette. She dismantled the Mercer aesthetic with clinical, undeniable precision.

As they were wrapping up the tour near the main entrance, Claire stopped abruptly.

Standing near the concierge desk, looking lost and slightly older, was Arthur.

He spotted her and slowly walked over, leaning heavily on his cane.

Sterling recognized the old board member and nodded politely. "Arthur. Good to see you."

"David," Arthur replied curtly before turning his full attention to Claire.

"Claire. I heard you were heading up the redesign."

"I'm submitting a proposal," Claire corrected politely.

Arthur looked around the lobby, his eyes tracing the heavy mahogany paneling he had helped install decades ago.

"You're going to tear it all down, aren't you?" Arthur asked, a strange mixture of sadness and resignation in his voice.

"I'm going to let the light in, Arthur," Claire said softly. "It's been dark in here for far too long."

Arthur nodded slowly, accepting the inevitable.

May you like

"Make it beautiful, Claire."

"I will."
