Chapter 20 - The Lunch Truce

Claire chose a small, quiet bistro that Evelyn would never have selected herself. It was modest, lacked valet parking, and served excellent, uncomplicated food.
Evelyn arrived exactly on time, looking slightly out of place in her rigid Chanel suit among the casual diners.
She sat across from Claire, examining the menu with a critical eye.
"This is... quaint," Evelyn noted.
"The food is good," Claire replied, pouring water into both their glasses.
They ordered in relative silence.
"How are the renovations going?" Evelyn asked, referring to her own townhouse project that Claire had politely declined to manage months ago.
"I hired an independent contractor," Evelyn sniffed. "He is slow, but acceptable."
"Good."
"And Vanguard?"
"Busy. We have three major projects closing this quarter."
Evelyn studied Claire over the rim of her water glass.
"You look different."
"I feel different."
"You seem less... burdened."
"I am."
Their food arrived, providing a brief respite from the heavy conversation.
Evelyn took a delicate bite of her salad.
"Daniel tells me you are entirely uninterested in reconciling."
"Daniel is correct."
"He is attending therapy," Evelyn offered, as if presenting a winning lottery ticket.
"I know."
"Do you believe he can change?"
Claire set her fork down.
"I believe anyone can change, Evelyn. But his change doesn't retroactively fix the marriage he broke."
Evelyn nodded slowly.
"I understand."
"Do you?"
"I spent my entire life trying to fix broken things by managing the people around them," Evelyn admitted, her voice dropping to a whisper. "I thought if I controlled the narrative, the reality would follow."
"It doesn't work that way."
May you like
"No. It does not."
They finished their lunch in a comfortable, surprisingly honest silence. It wasn't forgiveness, but it was a truce.
