Chapter 34 - The Seattle Postcard

The mail arrived with a small, unassuming postcard tucked between bills and design catalogs.
The front featured a glossy, generic picture of the Space Needle against a cloudy sky.
Claire flipped it over.
The handwriting was unmistakably Daniel’s.
It rains here constantly. The coffee is aggressive. I bought a small apartment near the water. I had to learn how to assemble my own furniture. It took me three days to build a bookshelf. It leans slightly to the left, but it holds the books.
I hope you are thriving, Claire.
D.
Claire read the postcard twice, standing in her sunlit kitchen.
She pictured Daniel, the man who used to throw away ties if they had a microscopic wrinkle, struggling with an Allen wrench and a poorly translated instruction manual.
She felt a brief, unexpected flash of genuine amusement.
It wasn't a plea for her to return. It wasn't an attempt to manipulate her.
It was just an update from a man who was finally learning how to live in the real world without a safety net.
She didn't write back. She didn't need to.

She walked over to her refrigerator and used a small magnet to pin the postcard to the door.
It wasn't a trophy. It was just a reminder that change, however clumsy and leaning slightly to the left, was possible.
