Three weeks later Valeria went into premature labor.
Adrián arrived at the private hospital wearing an expensive suit and carrying flowers for the cameras.
Doctors congratulated him.
Friends called him the perfect husband.
Only Elena noticed that Valeria flinched every time he touched her.
A healthy baby girl was born just before sunrise.
They named her Isabel.
As Adrián smiled for family photographs, investigators quietly entered the hospital parking garage.
A judge from another federal jurisdiction had reviewed the evidence overnight.
This time, Adrián's political connections had failed.
Detectives waited until he kissed his newborn daughter.
Then they approached.
"Licenciado Adrián Cárdenas?"
He turned confidently.
"Yes?"
"You are under arrest for domestic violence, witness intimidation, bribery, evidence tampering, conspiracy, and financial crimes."
His smile disappeared.
"You have no idea who you're arresting."
One investigator answered calmly.
"We know exactly who."
