Chapter 1 – The Safe Behind the Bookshelf

Chapter 1 – The Safe Behind the Bookshelf
Valeria had once laughed bitterly while folding baby clothes.
"Adrián thinks he's clever. He uses the baby's due date as the code for everything."
At the time, Elena had assumed it was another controlling habit.
Now, standing before the hidden safe, she entered the expected delivery date.
The lock clicked open.
Inside were thick envelopes, several encrypted flash drives, stacks of cash, and a black notebook filled with handwritten names.
Judges.
Prosecutors.
Police commanders.
Business executives.
Beside each name were numbers, dates, and brief notes.
Paid. Owes favor. Destroy if necessary.
Elena's hands trembled.
This wasn't simply evidence of corruption.
It was an entire system.
Then she found another folder.
The label read:
Valeria.
Her heart nearly stopped.
Inside were photographs of bruises taken without her daughter's knowledge, medical reports altered by private doctors, psychiatric evaluations falsely describing Valeria as emotionally unstable, and draft custody petitions already prepared before the baby had even been born.
Adrián had spent months creating the perfect legal trap.
He intended to convince the court that Valeria was mentally unfit, take custody of the child immediately after birth, and leave her with nothing.
Elena quietly photographed every page.
She copied every document from the flash drives onto her own portable drive before placing everything back exactly as she had found it.
When she left the office, she whispered into the darkness,

"You've spent your life defending monsters."
"You never imagined one mother would become your worst case."
