Chapter 13 - The Senator's Resistance

Within three weeks, Isabel's Law had reached the floor of the State Senate, sparking a massive, vicious political firestorm.
Senator Vargas, a powerful, deeply corrupt politician with known ties to Adrián's former business associates, became the loudest, most aggressive opponent of the bill.
Valeria watched him on the television in her office as he delivered a sweating, furious speech to the press corps.
"This proposed law is a draconian violation of due process!"
Senator Vargas shouted into the microphones, his face flushed red.
"It strips hardworking men of their assets based on mere accusations! We cannot allow emotional charities to dictate the financial laws of this state!"
Elena walked into Valeria's office, clicking the television off with a remote control.
"He is terrified,"
Elena observed smoothly, taking a seat on the leather sofa.
"He is protecting his donors. Half the men funding his re-election campaign are exactly the type of men this law would destroy,"
Valeria noted, crossing her arms over her chest.
"Then we do not argue with him in the press,"
Elena said, a chilling, predatory gleam appearing in her eyes.
"We simply expose the puppet master pulling his strings. I will have my private investigators look into the Senator's offshore accounts immediately."

"Burn him to the ground, Mother,"
Valeria agreed without a single shred of hesitation.
