Chapter 35 - The Final Rest

|

Two years later, Evelyn passed away peacefully in her sleep.

It was late autumn. The trees outside her window had shed their leaves, preparing for the winter frost.

Adrian found her in the morning, her face completely relaxed, devoid of the pain and frustration that had plagued her final years.

The funeral was a quiet, private affair. Only family and a few close friends attended. There was no grand spectacle, no press, no corporate posturing.

Adrian stood before the small gathering at the cemetery, the cold wind biting at his face.

"My mother was a complicated woman," Adrian began, looking down at the polished wood of the casket. "She was driven by a profound, consuming fear of failure. She believed that control was the only way to ensure survival."

He paused, looking at Claire, who offered a supportive, steady smile.

"For a long time, her fear almost destroyed this family," Adrian continued, his voice echoing in the quiet graveyard. "But in the end, she allowed herself to be vulnerable. She allowed us to care for her when she could no longer control her world. And in that vulnerability, I finally met my mother."

He picked up a handful of earth and dropped it gently onto the casket.

"She taught me how to fight," Adrian whispered into the wind. "But Claire taught me how to put the weapons down."

They walked away from the grave together, Adrian’s hand firmly holding Claire’s.

The past was finally buried. The ghosts were laid to rest.
