Chapter 31 - The New Roommate

|

Moving Evelyn into their home was a monumental adjustment.

The first-floor guest room was converted into a comfortable, accessible space. Claire spent a weekend painting the walls a soothing shade of pale blue and arranging Evelyn’s favorite books on the shelves.

When the medical transport brought Evelyn to the house, she looked terrified. The loss of her independence was a heavier blow than the stroke itself.

Adrian wheeled her into the bedroom, helping the nurses transfer her to the bed.

"It looks lovely," Evelyn slurred, her speech slowly improving but still thick with effort. She looked around the room, her eyes lingering on Claire, who stood quietly by the door.

"Thank you, Claire," Evelyn managed to say, the vulnerability in her voice entirely genuine.

"You're welcome," Claire replied warmly. "Dinner will be ready in an hour. The nurse can bring you a tray, or we can help you to the table."

Evelyn swallowed hard. "The table, please."

Dinner was a quiet, careful affair. Miles, now twelve, sat across from his grandmother, watching her struggle to hold her fork with her weakened right hand.

Evelyn dropped a piece of roasted potato onto the tablecloth. She froze, humiliation washing over her features. She squeezed her eyes shut, waiting for the pity or the judgment.

Miles simply reached over with his own fork, picked up the potato, and dropped it into the trash bowl in the center of the table.

"I dropped my entire glass of milk yesterday," Miles offered casually, returning to his meal. "Barnaby licked it all up before Mom could even get the mop."

Evelyn opened her eyes, looking at her grandson. She offered a small, crooked, incredibly grateful smile.

"Thank you, Miles."

There was no tension. There was no fear. There was just a family eating dinner.
