Chapter 23 - The Architectural Request

Claire’s design firm was thriving. She specialized in restoring historic homes, maintaining their original character while updating their functionality.
One afternoon, she received a call from an unknown number.
"Claire, it’s Evelyn."
Claire paused, wiping plaster dust from her jeans. "Hello, Evelyn. Is everything alright?"
"Yes," Evelyn replied, her voice holding a rare note of hesitation. "I am calling in a professional capacity. I am considering downsizing. The house is entirely too large for one person. I want to purchase a smaller property downtown, but it requires significant renovation."
Claire walked out to her car, seeking quiet.
"You want me to design the renovation?"
"If you are willing," Evelyn said. "I trust your aesthetic judgment. And... I would prefer to work with family, rather than strangers."
The word 'family' hung in the air, heavy and loaded with years of complicated history.
"I charge my standard rate, Evelyn," Claire said firmly, establishing the boundary immediately. "And I don't compromise on structural integrity or design choices to appease impatient clients."
"I wouldn't expect you to," Evelyn agreed quickly. "I want your professional expertise. Completely on your terms."
Claire thought about the quiet progress they had made over the past few years. The careful, measured steps forward.
"Send me the address of the property," Claire decided. "I'll take a look at it next week."
"Thank you, Claire."
When Claire told Adrian about the request that evening, he looked surprised but ultimately pleased.

"She asked for my help," Claire said, pouring them both a glass of wine. "Not my obedience. There’s a difference."
