Chapter 24 - The Renovation Dispute

|

The property Evelyn had purchased was a beautiful, albeit neglected, 1920s townhouse near the city center. It had stunning original woodwork, but the layout was cramped and dark.

Claire stood in the center of the main living area, holding a clipboard, while Evelyn surveyed the peeling wallpaper.

"I want this entire wall removed," Evelyn pointed to a load-bearing structure separating the living room from the kitchen. "It feels claustrophobic."

"We can't remove the entire wall," Claire explained patiently, tapping her pen against the clipboard. "It supports the second-floor master suite. We can widen the doorway and add a pass-through, but the central pillar has to stay."

Evelyn frowned, her old authoritarian instincts flaring up.

"Surely a steel beam could replace the support. I want an open concept."

"A steel beam would require dropping the ceiling height by over a foot, which would ruin the original crown molding you specifically said you wanted to keep," Claire countered, her voice calm but unyielding.

Evelyn crossed her arms. "I am paying for a renovation, Claire. I expect to get what I want."

The air in the dusty room grew tense. It was the first real conflict they had faced since beginning the project.

Claire didn't shrink back. She didn't apologize.

"You are paying for my expertise," Claire corrected smoothly. "My expertise tells you that removing that wall compromises the structural integrity and the historical value of the home. I will not authorize it."

Evelyn stared at her, the silence stretching out uncomfortably long.

Claire waited, fully prepared to walk off the job if necessary. She owned her decisions now.

Finally, Evelyn let out a slow breath, uncrossing her arms.

"A pass-through," Evelyn conceded quietly. "With custom millwork to match the original."

"I can design that," Claire nodded, making a note on her clipboard.

They moved on to the kitchen layout, the crisis averted not by submission, but by a firm, respected boundary.
