Chapter 29 - The Hospital Call

|
It happened on a Tuesday morning in late November.
Adrian was in a meeting when his cell phone buzzed with an emergency override tone from a local hospital.
He answered immediately.
"Mr. Vale? This is St. Jude’s Medical Center. We are calling regarding your mother, Evelyn Vale."
The air left Adrian’s lungs.
"What happened?"
"She suffered a severe stroke this morning," the nurse explained, her voice professionally calm. "She is currently in the ICU. Her condition is critical."
Adrian drove to the hospital in a blur, his hands gripping the steering wheel so tightly his knuckles turned white. He called Claire on the way, his voice shaking.
"I'm meeting you there," Claire promised without hesitation.
When Adrian arrived at the ICU, the sterile smell of antiseptic and the rhythmic beeping of monitors immediately transported him back to the darkest days of their past.
He found his mother lying in a hospital bed, looking incredibly small and frail beneath the white sheets. Machines hummed and clicked around her, monitoring her fragile vitals.
The doctor pulled Adrian aside.
"The stroke was massive, Mr. Vale. It affected the left hemisphere of her brain. If she survives the next forty-eight hours, there will likely be significant cognitive and motor deficits."
Adrian stood by her bedside, staring at the woman who had once controlled an empire with an iron fist, now completely helpless, tethered to life-support machines.
Claire arrived twenty minutes later, breathless. She walked into the room and immediately wrapped her arms around Adrian from behind, resting her cheek against his back.
They stood together in silence, watching the monitor trace the jagged peaks and valleys of Evelyn’s heartbeat.

"I don't know what I'm supposed to feel," Adrian confessed quietly, his voice cracking.
"You're allowed to feel whatever comes," Claire murmured, holding him tighter. "Grief doesn't require a perfect history."
