Chapter 32 - The High School Debate

|

Time shifted into a new, surprisingly stable rhythm.

Evelyn’s physical condition stabilized, though she remained wheelchair-bound. She spent her days reading in the sunroom, watching Barnaby sleep, and observing the chaotic, loving energy of the household.

Miles was now a sophomore in high school, deeply involved in the debate team.

He was practicing his opening statement for an upcoming tournament in the living room, pacing back and forth with a stack of index cards.

"The affirmative position relies on outdated economic models," Miles projected confidently, gesturing with his hands. "If we look at the data from the past decade..."

Evelyn watched him from her wheelchair, her head tilted slightly.

"Your posture is weak, Miles," Evelyn interrupted, her speech still slightly slurred but her critical eye as sharp as ever.

Miles stopped pacing, looking at her.

"My posture?"

"You are slouching when you deliver your main point," Evelyn instructed, pointing a shaking finger at him. "You are asking the audience to believe your authority, but your body language apologizes for taking up space. Stand up straight. Plant your feet. Own the room."

Miles frowned, then straightened his spine, pulling his shoulders back. He delivered the line again.

"Better," Evelyn nodded approvingly. "Now, project from your chest, not your throat."

Adrian watched from the kitchen, holding a cup of coffee, a smile playing on his lips.

Evelyn was still directing, still correcting, but the malice was entirely gone. She was using her formidable skills not to control her grandson, but to empower him.

"She’s a brutal coach," Claire noted, leaning against the counter beside Adrian.

"She always was," Adrian agreed softly. "But this time, she’s coaching for the right team."
