Chapter 21 - The Box of Photographs

|

The morning after the storm was bright and clear. Adrian drove his mother to the airport, the conversation stilted but polite.

When he returned home, Claire was sitting at the kitchen table, the heavy wooden box Evelyn had left sitting open in front of her.

Miles was at preschool, leaving the house unusually quiet.

"What did she leave?" Adrian asked, pouring himself a cup of coffee.

Claire pulled out a stack of black and white photographs, sliding them across the table.

"It's your father," Claire said softly.

Adrian froze, his hand tightening around his mug. He hadn't seen a picture of his father in almost three decades. His mother had systematically erased the man from their lives after the divorce.

He walked over and picked up the top photograph. It showed a young, smiling man holding a toddler on his shoulders. The man looked incredibly similar to Adrian.

"There are letters, too," Claire pointed to a bundle tied with faded ribbon. "Addressed to you. From him."

Adrian felt the air leave his lungs.

"She kept them?"

"She hid them," Claire corrected gently.

Adrian stared at the letters. Decades of manufactured resentment fought against a sudden, overwhelming curiosity.

"Why now?" he whispered.

"I think," Claire said, resting her hand over his, "she realized that controlling the past doesn't guarantee the future. She’s trying to unbury the things she hid."

Adrian opened the first letter. The handwriting was messy, hurried, and filled with apologies and desperate affection. It was a far cry from the narrative of the careless, abandoning monster Evelyn had always described.

"He wanted to see me," Adrian realized, a knot forming in his throat.

"He tried," Claire agreed.

Adrian spent the rest of the morning reading the letters. He didn't feel anger toward his mother; he simply felt a profound, exhausting sadness for the frightened woman who had felt the need to lock away the truth to maintain her power.

It was another broken piece of the puzzle finally falling into place.
