Chapter 27 - The Corporate Request

|

Vanguard Strategies was now a dominant force in corporate consulting. Adrian’s reputation for ethical, transparent restructuring had made him highly sought after.

On a rainy Thursday, his secretary buzzed his office.

"Mr. Vale," she said, her voice sounding slightly confused. "There is a board member from Vale Holdings on line two. He says it's urgent."

Adrian froze. Vale Holdings was the empire his mother had built, the company he had walked away from. He hadn't spoken to anyone on that board in over a decade.

He pressed the blinking button on his phone.

"Adrian Vale speaking."

"Adrian, it’s Marcus Thorne," the voice boomed. Thorne had been a junior board member when Adrian left, a ruthless opportunist. "We need your help."

"I don't consult for Vale Holdings, Marcus. You know that."

"The company is hemorrhaging money, Adrian," Thorne pleaded, dropping his usual arrogant tone. "The current CEO made a series of disastrous acquisitions in Asia. We are facing massive layoffs and a potential SEC investigation. We need someone to come in and restructure the debt before the shareholders tear us apart."

Adrian leaned back in his chair, looking out at the city skyline.

"Why are you calling me?" Adrian asked coldly.

"Because you’re the only one who knows the foundation of this company well enough to untangle this mess without sinking the ship. We are prepared to offer you an exorbitant consulting fee. Name your price."

Adrian felt a familiar, dark pull. The ghost of his mother’s ambition whispering in his ear. The desire to return as the savior, to prove he could fix what they had broken.

He looked at the framed picture of Claire and Miles on his desk.

"My price is absolute autonomy," Adrian said slowly.

"Done," Thorne agreed instantly.

"And full transparency. Every ledger, every hidden account. If I find fraud, I report it immediately. No cover-ups."

Thorne hesitated. "Adrian, be reasonable."

"Those are my terms," Adrian said firmly. "Take them or leave them."

"We'll take them," Thorne sighed in defeat.

Adrian hung up the phone. He was going back into the belly of the beast, but this time, he wasn't going as a captive. He was going as the surgeon holding the scalpel.
