Chapter 30 - The Awakening

|

Evelyn survived the critical window.

Three days later, she opened her eyes. The right side of her face drooped slightly, and she struggled to move her right arm.

Adrian sat beside her bed, holding a cup of water with a straw.

"You're in the hospital, Mother," Adrian explained gently. "You had a stroke."

Evelyn blinked slowly, processing the information. She tried to speak, but the words came out garbled and slurred. Frustration flared in her eyes, hot and angry. She hated being weak. She hated being out of control.

"Don't try to talk yet," Adrian soothed, guiding the straw to her lips. "Rest."

Over the next two weeks, the reality of her new life settled in. She would require intensive physical and speech therapy. She could no longer live alone in the townhouse. She needed full-time care.

The doctors presented Adrian with a list of high-end rehabilitation facilities.

He brought the brochures home and laid them on the kitchen table, rubbing his tired eyes.

"She's going to hate all of them," Adrian sighed, looking at the glossy photos of sterile nursing homes. "She'll feel like she's being warehoused."

Claire picked up one of the brochures, studying the details. She set it down and looked at Adrian.

"She doesn't have to go to a facility," Claire said quietly.

Adrian frowned. "What other option is there? We can't afford round-the-clock private nurses in her townhouse."

"She can come here," Claire said.

The kitchen went entirely still.

Adrian stared at his wife, searching her face for any sign of hesitation or resentment. He found none.

"Claire... are you serious? After everything she did? You would let her live under our roof?"

"She is an old, sick woman, Adrian," Claire said softly, her eyes full of profound, hard-won grace. "She isn't a threat anymore. We have an extra bedroom on the first floor. We can hire a daytime nurse to help while we work."

"I won't ask you to do this," Adrian protested, his voice thick with emotion.

"You didn't ask," Claire smiled gently. "I offered. Because this is what family does when they are finally healthy enough to do it."
