Chapter 18 - The Kindergarten Play

|
The auditorium of the local elementary school smelled distinctly of floor wax and nervous energy. Parents crowded onto folding chairs, holding smartphones like shields, ready to document the culmination of three weeks of kindergarten rehearsals.
Miles was cast as a rather enthusiastic, if slightly uncoordinated, bumblebee.
Adrian sat beside Claire, checking his watch. He had taken the entire afternoon off from his consulting firm. It was a firm he had helped build from the ground up after leaving his mother's empire, and it afforded him the one luxury he valued above all else: time.
Evelyn sat three seats away, separated from them by two empty chairs and an older couple who smelled strongly of peppermint. She wore a tailored navy suit, looking entirely out of place amidst the casual chaos of a school play, but she sat perfectly still.
"She’s nervous," Claire whispered to Adrian, leaning closer so the older couple wouldn't hear.
"I know," Adrian murmured back. "She’s afraid of breaking a rule we haven't established yet."
The curtain finally parted, revealing a stage full of five-year-olds dressed as various insects and flowers. Miles buzzed onto the stage, completely missing his mark and almost colliding with a girl dressed as a daisy.
Adrian laughed out loud. Claire covered her mouth, her shoulders shaking with silent amusement.
Evelyn leaned forward, a genuine, unguarded smile breaking across her usually composed features.
When the play ended, the parents flooded the stage.
Miles ran toward them, his black and yellow striped costume slightly askew.
"Did you see me fly?" he demanded, buzzing loudly.
"You were the best bee in the entire garden," Claire praised, pulling him into a tight hug.
Miles wiggled free and looked at Evelyn.
He hesitated for a second, then buzzed toward her, stopping just inches away.
"Did you see?"
Evelyn knelt down, ignoring the dust on the auditorium floor that threatened her expensive trousers.
"I saw everything," she said softly. "You were magnificent, Miles."
She did not try to hug him. She simply offered a warm, approving smile.
Miles seemed satisfied with this exchange and buzzed back toward Adrian.
As they walked out to the parking lot, Evelyn turned to them.
"Thank you for inviting me," she said, her voice formal but sincere.

"You're welcome," Claire replied simply.
It wasn't a profound reconciliation, but it was an ordinary afternoon. And for them, ordinary was a massive victory.
