Chapter 9 - The Harbor Ambush

The question hit Matteo like a physical blow.
He took a frantic step backward, bumping his spine against the hood of the black sports car.
"I... I don't know what you're talking about," Matteo stammered, sweat breaking out across his forehead despite the freezing air. "What doll? What camera?"
"Daisy," Alessandro said, his tone flat and terrifyingly steady. "The blue glass eye caught your reflection when you were standing outside my study door at three in the morning. Victoria was very thorough in explaining how you planned to execute Emma and her daughter after taking my vault codes."
Matteo’s eyes went wild with panic. All pretense of brotherhood vanished, replaced by the desperate, cornered madness of a traitor.
"You're a hypocrite, Alessandro!" Matteo screamed, his voice echoing off the corrugated iron walls. "You sit in that mansion playing the honorable Don while the Valenti family eats away our territory! You care more about a damn maid and her bastard child than you do about expanding our empire!"
He suddenly reached into his coat for his gun.
Before his fingers could even touch the grip of his pistol, a silenced shot cracked through the warehouse air.
THWIP.
Matteo screamed in agony as a high-caliber round shattered his knee. He collapsed onto the concrete, clutching his leg, blood pooling quickly beneath his designer trousers.
The two guards near the dock raised their hands instantly, dropping their weapons to the floor as Rocco and Marco emerged from the shadows with tactical rifles raised.
Alessandro stepped forward, looking down at his bleeding brother without a shred of emotion.
"You speak of empire," Alessandro said cold, leaning down to pull Matteo’s gun from his holster and tossing it into the darkness. "But you don't even know who controls your own ambush."
Suddenly, the heavy rolling doors at the far end of the warehouse slammed open with a deafening roar.

Three dark vans burst into the building, their tires screeching as they swung around to block the exits. High-powered headlights blinded everyone inside the warehouse.
The Valenti clan hadn't waited until Saturday. They had followed Matteo to the docks.
