Chapter 14 - The Gathering of the Syndicate

Alessandro looked down at the fragile, resilient woman standing before him.
For eleven months, he had watched her quietly dust his books, prepare his tea, and care for her little girl with a quiet dignity that had slowly melted the ice around his heart. She hadn't stayed for his money or his power; she had stayed because she trusted his protection.
He reached out, his large hand gently lifting her chin so she was forced to look into his dark eyes.
"You are not leaving this house, Emma," Alessandro said, his tone softer than anyone in the mafia underworld had ever heard it. "And you will never hide again."
Emma’s breath hitched. "But Don Valenti—"
"Don Valenti crossed my perimeter," Alessandro interrupted firmly. "He placed a wiretap in my nursery. He corrupted my brother, and he targeted my staff. In twenty-four hours, the Valenti family will cease to exist."
Lily stirred in the bedroom adjoining the sitting room, letting out a small yawn before rubbing her eyes and shuffling out in her footie pajamas.
She blinked at Alessandro, then looked at his jacket.
"Mr. Moretti?" Lily murmured, walking over and wrapping her arms around his leg. "Did you fix Daisy?"
Alessandro looked down at the little girl, a genuine, rare smile breaking across his stern face. He crouched down and picked her up, resting her comfortably against his hip.
"Daisy is undergoing a little repair, sweetheart," Alessandro promised her softly. "But I brought you something else."
He reached into his inner jacket pocket and pulled out a small, plush velvet bear—one he had instructed Marco to purchase from an all-night store on their way back from the harbor.
Lily’s eyes lit up as she took the bear, hugging it tightly against her chest.

"Does this one have a red light in its eye?" she asked innocently.
"No, little one," Alessandro replied, glancing up at Emma with an unshakeable promise in his gaze. "That bear only has eyes to keep you safe."
