Chapter 17 - The Fall of the Traitors

|

"Fire!" Don Valenti shrieked, pointing his finger at the balcony.

Before his men could raise their weapons, the surrounding hedge line exploded with gunfire.

Dozens of Moretti soldiers, led by Rocco and Capo Vanzini, emerged from hidden positions behind the stone pillars, garden walls, and service buildings, completely encircling the four trapped vehicles.

The firefight was over in less than ninety seconds.

The Valenti bodyguards were completely overwhelmed, their weapons shot from their hands as they were forced to drop to their knees in the wet gravel, screaming for mercy.

Don Valenti stood in the center of the courtyard, his hands raised high in the air, his face pale as chalk as Rocco stepped forward and kicked his gun away.

Alessandro walked down the grand outer staircase, flanked by Marco and two guards. He stopped three feet from the trembling New York mob boss.

"Alessandro... please!" Valenti stammered, his bravado entirely crushed. "It was business! Purely business! We can make a deal—I’ll give you half my New York territory!"

Alessandro didn't answer. He motioned toward the side entrance of the mansion.

Rocco dragged two bound figures out into the courtyard light.

It was Matteo and Victoria. Both were wearing orange jumpsuit garments, their wrists tied with heavy zip-ties, their eyes swollen from weeping in the holding cells.

Matteo looked up at Don Valenti, a bitter, hysterical laugh breaking from his lips.

"He lied to you too, Carmine," Matteo rasped out. "He isn't dead. Nobody dies in this house unless he says so."

Don Valenti stared at the traitorous brother, realizing the depth of the trap he had walked into.

"What are you going to do with us, Moretti?" Valenti whispered, shivering in the cold morning air.

Alessandro looked at the three traitors standing before him.

"You came here for Emma Bennett," Alessandro said smoothly. "So it is only fair that she decides your fate."
