Chapter 8 - Protecting the Innocent

|

Inside Warehouse 14, the smell of diesel fuel and salt water hung thick in the air. High above, yellow industrial lamps swung lazily from the steel rafters, casting erratic shadows across rows of imported luxury sedans.

Matteo Moretti stood beside a matte-black sports car, holding an iPad as he checked the VIN numbers against a shipping ledger. Two armed guards stood near the open loading dock, sipping hot coffee from paper cups.

The heavy steel side door of the warehouse creaked open.

Matteo didn't look up immediately. "I told you guys to keep the perimeter clear until the morning crew arrives—"

"You always were careless with perimeter security, Matteo," a smooth, deep voice echoed through the vast space.

Matteo went entirely rigid.

The iPad slipped from his fingers, crashing onto the concrete floor and shattering the glass screen.

He turned slowly, his face draining of all color as he saw his older brother walking calmly down the central aisle between the cars. Alessandro was alone, his hands tucked casually into his coat pockets, his polished shoes clicking softly against the concrete.

The two guards near the loading dock instinctively reached for their sidearms.

"Touch those guns," Alessandro said without breaking his stride, "and you die before your bodies hit the floor."

The absolute authority in his voice was so absolute that both guards froze, their hands hovering helplessly over their holsters.

Matteo swallowed hard, trying desperately to force a smile onto his pale face.

"Alessandro!" Matteo choked out, his voice pitched an octave too high. "What... what are you doing here at this hour? You should be at the estate sleeping!"

Alessandro stopped five feet from his younger brother. He looked at Matteo’s shivering frame, seeing not a powerful syndicate leader, but a foolish boy who had traded his soul for cheap ambition.

"I came to ask you a question, brother," Alessandro said softly.

Matteo’s eyes darted nervously toward the dark corners of the warehouse. "A question? About the shipment? The cars cleared customs an hour ago—"

"Why did you put a camera in the child’s doll?" Alessandro asked.
