Chapter 1 - The Red Light in the Glass

|

The air inside the nursery turned arctic in a single breath.

Marco, the chief security technician, stood unmoving with his handheld scanner hovering inches from the doll’s face. The device emitted a high-pitched, rhythmic chirp that bounced off the pastel walls like an alarm bell.

Alessandro Moretti did not react with anger. He stood as still as a statue carved from granite, his dark eyes locked on the doll held in Marco’s gloved hands.

"What is that sound?" Victoria asked, her voice tight, a high-society tremble bleeding through her polished facade. "Alessandro, tell your technician to put that filthy thing away. You’re scaring the child!"

"The child isn't scared," Alessandro said softly, his voice dropping an octave into a low, terrifying rumble. "Are you scared, Lily?"

Lily sat cross-legged on the rug, her small hands resting in her mother’s lap. She shook her head once, her blonde hair catching the dim lamp light.

"No, Mr. Moretti," Lily whispered. "Daisy is the one that's scared. She blinks when Miss Victoria comes near."

Victoria’s silk robe rustled as she took a sharp step backward toward the corridor.

"This is ridiculous," Victoria sneered, looking around at the two heavy enforcers guarding the doorway. "I brought a antique gift into this house out of the goodness of my heart! If your security team is so paranoid that they inspect a toddler’s plaything, perhaps I should return to my father’s estate tonight!"

"You aren't going anywhere, Victoria," Alessandro said without looking at her.

He stepped closer to Marco and extended his right hand.

"Open it," Alessandro commanded. "Now."

Marco pulled a slim scalpels from his tactical belt. With surgical care, he ran the blade down the back seam of Daisy’s worn cotton dress. The yellowed batting parted, revealing the interior of the stuffed head.

There, embedded directly behind the blue glass left eye, sat a metallic cylinder no larger than a thumb drive. A tiny, fiber-optic lens pointed straight through the painted iris, connected to a micro-circuit board and a high-yield transmitter node.

A pinprick red LED pulsed rhythmically on the side of the casing.

"Military-grade, Don Alessandro," Marco reported, his voice devoid of emotion. "Omnidirectional microphone, thermal-capable optic, and a continuous local burst relay. Someone has been watching this room twenty-four hours a day."
