Chapter 16 - Iron Gates and Gunfire

|
At 10:30 AM, a convoy of four sleek black Cadillac Escalades rolled slowly down the quiet residential avenue toward the Moretti estate.
Inside the lead vehicle sat Don Carmine Valenti—a ruthless, sixty-year-old mob boss with silver hair, a heavy gold ring on every finger, and a reputation for utter cruelty.
He stared out the window at the towering iron gates of the estate, a triumphant smirk resting on his weathered face.
"Twenty years I waited to take this city from the Moretti family," Valenti chuckled to his chief enforcer sitting beside him. "And all it took was a greedy little brother and a silk dress."
The convoy reached the front gate. To Valenti’s surprise, the heavy iron gates swung open automatically, allowing the four vehicles to drive up the long, winding gravel driveway without resistance.
The estate appeared deserted. The grand fountain in the courtyard was quiet, the windows were dark, and not a single guard was visible on the manicured lawns.
The four Cadillacs pulled to a stop in front of the massive stone steps leading to the front doors.
Don Valenti stepped out of his car, adjusting his tailored wool coat, flanked by eight heavily armed bodyguards holding concealed automatic weapons.
"Check the front hall," Valenti commanded his lead man. "Bring Matteo and the girl out here."
Two Valenti hitmen stepped up the stone stairs and pushed open the heavy oak front doors.
The grand foyer inside was completely pitch black.
Before the hitmen could step across the threshold, a massive steel shutter slammed down behind them, sealing the front entrance with a deafening CRASH!
At the same second, the iron gates at the end of the driveway slammed shut and locked with a heavy mechanical latch.
Valenti spun around, his smirk vanishing in a heartbeat. "What the hell is this?!"
High above on the second-floor balcony, a single arched window swung open.

Alessandro Moretti stepped into view, looking down at the trapped Valenti crew like a king looking down at peasants in a moat.
"Welcome to my home, Carmine," Alessandro’s voice boomed across the courtyard through the exterior speakers. "I believe you were looking for my maid?"
