Chapter 5 - The Snake in the Family

|
The control room descended into an absolute, suffocating silence.
Matteo was twenty-six years old. Alessandro had raised him after their father was murdered in a rival hit two decades ago. He had given Matteo wealth, education, power, and unconditional trust. He had made him the treasurer of the entire syndicate.
On the screen, Matteo was seen sliding the skimming device over Alessandro’s biometric lock, copying the digital signature of the master safe.
Then, another figure appeared on the screen.
Victoria.
On the video feed, Victoria walked up behind Matteo, wrapped her arms around his waist, and kissed his cheek.
"Did you get the sequence?" Victoria’s recorded voice whispered through the room’s high-fidelity speakers.
"Almost," Matteo’s recorded voice replied with a low laugh. "The camera in the kid’s doll caught his thumb placement on the glass reflection when he opened the safe yesterday. One more day and we have the full bypass code for the European accounts."
"What about Alessandro?" Victoria asked on the recording.
"The Valenti family is moving forty shooters to the docks on Saturday night," Matteo spat on the audio feed. "When Alessandro goes down there to sign the shipping treaty, they’ll turn his car into swiss cheese. We take the money, frame his chief enforcer, and take over the city."
"And the maid’s kid?" Victoria asked casually on the tape. "She’s been staring at the doll all week."
"We’ll leave the kid and her mother in the house when the Valentis hit it," Matteo replied coldly. "Collateral damage. Nobody looks twice at dead staff."
The video recording ended, returning the screen to a blue static grid.
Victoria was weeping silently against the radiator, her body shaking hysterically.
"Alessandro... please!" she sobbed, her voice echoing off the concrete walls of the control room. "He forced me! Matteo threatened to kill my family if I didn't help him place the doll!"
Alessandro slowly stood up from his chair.
He didn't draw a weapon. He didn't raise his voice. He simply adjusted the cufflinks of his crisp white shirt, his expression as cold and unreadable as the dark ocean.
"Marco," Alessandro said quietly.
