Chapter 12 - The Maid's Secret

Alessandro’s face darkened instantly. "Why would they be listening to Emma?"
"I'm pulling the audio logs right now, sir," Marco said, scrolling through the cloned files. "It looks like... Don Valenti wasn't just using Matteo to get your vault codes. He was looking for someone who disappeared from New York five years ago."
Alessandro grabbed the phone from Marco's hand and stared at the file header.
The file was labeled: TARGET_BENNETT_EX-VALENTI_ASSET.
Alessandro’s breath hitched slightly in his chest.
Emma Bennett was not just an innocent woman who had applied for a cleaning job eleven months ago through an agency. She was the widow of Thomas Bennett—the former chief accountant for the Valenti Crime Family in New York, who had fled the East Coast after testifying against Don Valenti's top lieutenants.
"She didn't tell you," Rocco whispered, looking at Alessandro with concern. "Boss... she lied to you when you hired her."
"She didn't lie to betray me," Alessandro realized, his mind racing as he connected the pieces. "She changed her name and hid in my house because she knew the Valenti family would never dare cross the iron gates of the Moretti estate."
He looked at Matteo, who was staring at the floor in silent shame.
"Don Valenti found out she was working for you six weeks ago," Matteo muttered in a low, broken voice. "He told me that if I helped him get your vault codes, he would take the girl and her mother back to New York to finish what he started five years ago."
Alessandro grabbed Matteo by the throat, slamming him against the side of the armored car.
"You knew who they were," Alessandro growled, his knuckles turning white as he choked his brother. "You knew they were hiding from monsters, and you handed them over for a percentage of a shipping port?"
"I... I wanted... power..." Matteo gasped out, his eyes rolling back.
Alessandro released his grip, letting Matteo collapse to the floor like a sack of wet flour.
"Rocco," Alessandro commanded, turning toward the exit. "Lock my brother in the holding cell next to Victoria. Secure the warehouse and clear the bodies."

"Where are you going, Don Alessandro?"
"Back to my house," Alessandro said, his eyes burning with a dangerous, protective fire. "Before Don Valenti realizes his hit squad is dead."
