Chapter 9 - The Delivery

The morning rain hammered against the windows of the safe house, casting a gloomy, gray light across the small living room. Elena was sitting on the couch, sipping a cup of hot coffee while reviewing a stack of custody documents the prosecutors had dropped off the night before. Maya was sitting on the floor, happily building a massive tower out of colorful wooden blocks, completely lost in her own safe, imaginative world.
Suddenly, a heavy knock echoed from the front door.
Elena jumped, her heart instantly hammering against her ribs. The safe house was completely off the grid. No one was supposed to know they were there, and Detective Jenkins always called before she arrived. Elena set her coffee down, her hands shaking slightly, and moved silently toward the hallway.
She checked the digital security monitor mounted on the wall. Outside, standing on the porch, was a delivery driver in a generic brown uniform holding a medium-sized cardboard box. He dropped the package on the welcome mat, turned around, and walked back to an unmarked white van parked on the street.
Elena unlocked the heavy deadbolts, opening the door just enough to reach out and pull the box inside. There was no return address. The shipping label simply had her name printed in elegant, unmistakable calligraphy.
Elena.
"Mommy, what is it?" Maya asked, looking up from her blocks.
"Just some paperwork, sweetie. Keep playing," Elena lied, her voice tight. She carried the box into the kitchen, grabbed a knife, and sliced through the packing tape.
When she opened the flaps, the breath completely left her lungs.
Resting inside the box was a stuffed rabbit. But it wasn't just any rabbit. It was an exact, flawless, custom-made replica of the stuffed animal Maya currently held in her arms—the one Elena had bought for her years ago. The only difference was that this replica had a thick, red ribbon tied tightly around its neck, resembling a noose, with a small, handwritten note pinned to its chest.
Elena picked up the note with trembling fingers. The calligraphy was perfect, elegant, and dripping with venom.

You can hide from a storm, Elena. But you cannot hide from the tide. I will see my granddaughter very soon. - Eleanor.
The message was clear, precise, and utterly terrifying. Eleanor Vance had completely bypassed the police security network. She knew exactly where they were.
