Chapter 8 - The Boardroom Coup

The emergency meeting of the Vance Holdings Board of Directors was a chaotic, panicked affair. Twelve of the most powerful corporate executives in the Southeast sat around a massive mahogany table in a towering Atlanta skyscraper, shouting over one another. Marcus’s highly publicized arrest had caused the company stock to plummet by thirty percent in a matter of days. Investors were fleeing, and federal regulators were threatening massive audits.

"We have to distance the company from Marcus immediately!" shouted the Chief Financial Officer, his face red with stress. "We need a public statement severing all ties, and we need to cooperate fully with the attorney general's office. If we don't, the SEC will shut us down by the end of the month!"

Before a vote could be called, the heavy oak doors of the boardroom swung open. The room fell into an immediate, stunned silence as Eleanor Vance walked in, flanked by two highly paid corporate attorneys. She had officially retired from the board five years ago, handing the reigns to Marcus, but her presence still commanded absolute, terrifying authority.

"There will be no panicked public statements," Eleanor announced, walking slowly to the head of the table and taking the seat that rightfully belonged to the CEO. "And there will certainly be no voluntary cooperation with federal auditors."

"Eleanor, with all due respect, Marcus is facing decades in federal prison," one of the older board members stammered. "The company cannot survive this scandal if we protect him."

"I am not here to protect Marcus," Eleanor said coldly, placing a thick leather binder on the table. "I am here to protect my empire. I have already drafted a legal resolution immediately stripping Marcus of all executive titles and voting rights. However, I am personally executing a hostile buyout of his remaining shares, funded entirely by my private offshore trusts. As of this exact moment, I hold the fifty-one percent majority voting power."

The board members stared at her in absolute shock. She had essentially executed a bloodless coup against her own son while he rotted in a jail cell.

"Vance Holdings will survive this because I am back in control," Eleanor declared, her eyes sweeping over the terrified executives. "And my first order of business is to absolutely bankrupt the woman who caused this crisis. Elena thinks she has won, but I am going to bury her under a mountain of litigation so massive she will never see the sun again."
