Chapter 12 - The Custody Petition

While Elena dug deep into the financial history of the Vance empire, Eleanor launched her first major legal offensive. She didn't rely on back-alley intimidation this time; she weaponized the justice system itself.

A heavy, official envelope was delivered to the federal bunker by a specialized courier. Detective Jenkins handed it to Elena with a grim, apologetic expression. Elena opened the thick document, her eyes scanning the complex legal jargon. Her blood ran cold.

Eleanor Vance had officially filed an emergency petition in the state supreme court for full, permanent grandparent custody of Maya.

"She is claiming that I am mentally unstable and unfit to parent," Elena read aloud, her hands trembling with a mixture of absolute rage and terror. "She hired a team of high-priced psychiatrists to testify that the 'trauma' I experienced has caused severe paranoia and borderline personality disorder. She’s arguing that keeping Maya in a military bunker is tantamount to child abuse, and that Maya requires the 'stable, luxurious, and nurturing' environment of the Vance estate."

"It's a classic smear campaign," Jenkins said, pacing the concrete floor. "She knows she can't physically take Maya from this base, so she’s going to use a sympathetic judge to order the state to hand her over legally. And with Marcus out of the picture, Eleanor is playing the role of the heartbroken, loving grandmother trying to save her family."

"She’s a monster," Elena whispered, looking toward the bedroom where Maya was sleeping. "If she gets her hands on my daughter, she will turn her into Marcus. She will break her spirit and mold her into another ruthless, arrogant puppet."

"We won't let that happen," Jenkins promised fiercely. "The district attorney is backing you. But the custody hearing is set for Friday. Eleanor requested an expedited docket due to 'emergency welfare concerns.' You are going to have to walk into that courtroom and face her directly."

Elena looked down at the petition. Eleanor was trying to terrify her into submission, expecting the abused, quiet wife to crumble under the intense pressure of a high-profile court battle. But Elena was no longer the victim who flinched at a raised voice. She had survived Marcus. She would survive his mother.

"Tell the prosecutors I want to represent myself in the family court," Elena said, a cold, unyielding resolve hardening in her chest. "I am going to burn her legacy to the ground."
