Chapter 4 - The Matriarch’s Wrath

Miles away from the crisp, liberating air of the Blue Ridge mountains, the atmosphere inside the sprawling Vance estate in Buckhead, Atlanta, was suffocatingly tense. Eleanor Vance, Marcus’s mother and the true, terrifying architect behind the family’s corporate empire, sat perfectly still in her high-backed leather armchair. The massive television screen in her pristine, mahogany-paneled library replayed the humiliating, catastrophic footage of her son being dragged out of a rustic cabin in handcuffs. The media was already calling it the corporate downfall of the decade, endlessly looping the moment Marcus’s arrogance shattered into pure terror.
Eleanor did not cry. She did not gasp in maternal horror or clutch her pearls. Instead, her perfectly manicured fingers tightened around the delicate handle of her porcelain teacup until her knuckles turned bone-white. She was a woman who had spent forty years ruthlessly building a fortune, crushing competitors, and maintaining an absolutely flawless public image in high society. Marcus was supposed to be her ultimate legacy. Instead, he had proven himself to be an arrogant, undisciplined fool who had allowed a seemingly submissive wife to outsmart him on a global stage.
"Turn it off," Eleanor commanded, her voice a sharp, icy whip that cut through the silence of the room.
Her longtime fixer and head of private security, a broad-shouldered man named Graves, immediately muted the television. "Ma'am, the board of directors is completely panicking. The company stock is in freefall. And the district attorney is fast-tracking the indictment against Marcus. They have undeniable proof."

"Let the board panic," Eleanor said softly, rising from her chair with the predatory grace of a seasoned hunter. She walked toward the massive bay window, looking out over her perfectly manicured, expansive lawns. "Marcus brought this entirely upon himself with his sloppy, emotional outbursts. But Elena has made a fatal miscalculation. She believes that putting my son in a cage means she has finally won."
Eleanor turned around, her eyes burning with a cold, absolute malice that made Marcus’s explosive temper look like a child’s harmless tantrum. "She has humiliated my family name, Graves. She has taken my granddaughter. I want a shadow team assembled immediately. Find out exactly where the state police are hiding them tonight. Elena is about to learn a harsh lesson. She hasn't slain the dragon. She merely woke the mother."
