Chapter 7 - The Shadow Moves

The first week in the safe house was a blur of legal briefings, endless paperwork, and intense psychological evaluations. Elena spent hours sitting at the small kitchen table with Detective Jenkins and the state prosecutors, meticulously walking them through the encrypted files she had stolen from Marcus’s private server. Every bruised photograph, every hidden bank routing number, every corrupt zoning document was entered into the official record.
While Elena dismantled the corporate empire, Maya began the slow, delicate process of healing. A child psychologist visited the safe house daily, working with the six-year-old through art therapy and quiet conversations. For the first time in her life, Maya was painting pictures with bright yellows and vibrant blues, rather than the dark, oppressive grays she used to favor. The constant, suffocating fear of making too much noise or triggering her father’s rage was finally beginning to lift.
But while the authorities celebrated their airtight case against Marcus, Eleanor Vance was actively marshaling her vast, subterranean resources. She had hired a team of elite private investigators, men who specialized in corporate espionage and high-stakes extractions, completely bypassing the standard legal channels.
Graves, Eleanor's head of security, stood in her pristine Atlanta office, presenting a thick dossier. "Ma'am, the state police have heavily encrypted the location of the safe house. We cannot hack their internal grid without triggering federal alarms. However, we traced the burner phone Elena used to initiate the livestream broadcast at the cabin."
Eleanor sipped her tea, her eyes narrowing with predatory focus. "And what did you find, Graves?"

"She purchased the phone at a convenience store three miles outside of the Blue Ridge jurisdiction. We pulled the store's security footage," Graves explained, sliding a photograph across the desk. "She wasn't alone. She had help setting up the cameras and the encrypted servers. A freelance cybersecurity expert named David Aris."
Eleanor smiled, a cold, terrifying expression. "Everyone has a price, Graves. Find this David Aris. Threaten him, bribe him, break him if you must. But do not return to this office until you have the exact address of where that woman is hiding my granddaughter."
