Chapter 13 - The Courtroom Showdown

The state supreme courthouse was a sprawling, imposing structure of white marble and heavy oak. The media had caught wind of the high-stakes custody battle, and dozens of reporters swarmed the exterior steps, hungry for the next chapter in the spectacular downfall of the Vance family.
Elena walked through the heavy wooden doors of Courtroom 3B, flanked by Detective Jenkins and two armed federal marshals. She wore a simple, professional navy blue suit, her posture straight and her expression entirely unreadable.
Sitting on the opposite side of the aisle was Eleanor Vance. The matriarch was dressed in an impeccable, conservative gray dress, playing the role of the deeply concerned, grieving grandmother to absolute perfection. She was surrounded by a team of five elite corporate litigators, carrying briefcases packed with manufactured psychological profiles and character assassinations.
"All rise," the bailiff announced as Judge Harrison, an older, stern-faced man, took the bench.
Eleanor’s lead attorney stood immediately, launching into a passionate, heavily rehearsed opening statement. He painted Elena as a deeply traumatized, unstable woman who was using her child as a pawn for revenge. He argued that the military bunker was a terrifying environment for a six-year-old, and that Eleanor Vance possessed the immense resources, the pristine estate, and the deep, abiding love necessary to provide Maya with a perfect life.
When it was Elena’s turn to speak, she didn't rely on emotional theatrics or high-priced lawyers. She stood up calmly, holding a single, thick manila folder.
"Your Honor," Elena began, her voice steady and echoing clearly in the quiet courtroom. "Mrs. Vance's attorney speaks of resources and a stable environment. He claims I am unfit because I have sought refuge in a federal facility. But he conveniently omits exactly why my daughter and I require such extreme protection."
Elena walked toward the judge's bench, placing the folder down. "I am not hiding from a phantom, Your Honor. I am hiding from the woman sitting in this courtroom."

Eleanor’s facade slipped for a fraction of a second, her eyes narrowing into dangerous slits as she watched Elena command the room.
"I have submitted into evidence a recorded phone call, obtained legally by federal investigators, between Eleanor Vance and a private mercenary firm," Elena stated boldly, turning to look directly into her mother-in-law's cold eyes. "A firm she hired to physically breach a state-run safe house last week."
