Chapter 19 - The Swiss Chalet

While Elena was busy dismantling the Vance empire in America, Eleanor Vance was discovering the harsh, freezing reality of life as an international fugitive. She had managed to escape to a heavily fortified, luxurious private chalet hidden deep in the snowy peaks of the Swiss Alps, using a forged diplomatic passport and a hidden cache of physical gold bullion.
But a woman who had spent forty years commanding armies of lawyers and controlling corporate boardrooms could not handle the suffocating isolation of the mountains. Eleanor was entirely alone. Graves had been arrested at the airport. Her friends in high society had completely abandoned her, scrubbing her name from their contact lists to avoid federal scrutiny.
She sat in the opulent living room of the chalet, wrapped in expensive furs, drinking heavily as she stared at the roaring fireplace. She was a queen without a kingdom, a matriarch without a family.
Her paranoia had reached a fever pitch. Every creak of the wooden floorboards, every howl of the alpine wind made her jump. She had convinced herself that Elena would send mercenaries to assassinate her in the snow.
But Elena didn't need mercenaries. She had the absolute, terrifying power of international law.
At 3:00 AM, the heavy, reinforced front doors of the Swiss chalet were violently blown off their hinges by a specialized explosive charge. The freezing alpine wind rushed into the living room, followed instantly by a dozen heavily armed Interpol tactical agents dressed in winter combat gear.
Eleanor dropped her glass of wine, the expensive crystal shattering on the stone floor. She tried to run toward the back exit, but two agents tackled her to the ground, pinning her forcefully against the cold stone.

"Eleanor Vance!" the lead Interpol agent shouted, clicking heavy steel handcuffs around her wrists. "You are under arrest pursuant to an international Red Notice for conspiracy to commit kidnapping, racketeering, and domestic terrorism! You are being extradited back to the United States immediately!"
As they dragged the screaming, thrashing matriarch out into the freezing snow, Eleanor looked back at the empty, luxurious chalet. Her money, her arrogance, and her ruthless intellect had finally failed her. The long, terrifying reign of the Vance family was officially over.
