Chapter 21 - The Verdict

The jury deliberated for less than six hours. The mountain of forensic evidence, the intercepted communications, and Elena’s absolutely devastating testimony had left zero room for reasonable doubt.
When the verdict was announced, the courtroom was packed to capacity. Marcus stood nervously beside his defeated defense attorneys, his hands trembling violently as the jury foreperson stood to read the decision.
"On the charge of felony domestic assault, we find the defendant, Marcus Vance... Guilty," the foreperson read clearly.
Marcus collapsed back into his chair, a heavy sob tearing from his throat. But the foreperson wasn't finished.
"On the charge of child endangerment... Guilty. On the charge of federal witness intimidation... Guilty. On the charge of conspiracy to commit kidnapping... Guilty. On the charge of racketeering and wire fraud... Guilty."
The gavel slammed down with absolute, echoing finality. The judge did not mince words during the immediate sentencing phase. Calling Marcus a "cowardly, arrogant predator who utilized vast wealth to terrorize his own family," the judge sentenced him to fifty-five years in a maximum-security federal penitentiary, without the possibility of early parole.
Marcus was immediately placed in heavy shackles. As the federal marshals dragged him out of the courtroom, he looked desperately into the gallery, searching for anyone who still supported him. But his mother was sitting in a separate federal holding facility awaiting her own trial, and his corporate friends had long since abandoned him. He was completely, utterly alone.
Elena watched the heavy wooden doors close behind him from the back of the gallery. She felt a profound, overwhelming wave of emotion wash over her. It wasn't joy, and it wasn't triumph. It was the pure, absolute weightlessness of true freedom. The cage was permanently locked, and she held the only key.

Detective Jenkins walked up beside her, placing a comforting hand on her shoulder. "It's over, Elena. He’s never seeing the outside of a cell again."
"I know," Elena smiled, wiping a single tear from her cheek. "Let's go home, Detective. I have a daughter waiting for me."
