Chapter 9 - The Midnight Search

The towering grandfather clock in the main hallway struck 2:00 AM, its deep chimes echoing through the empty space. The massive house was completely silent, wrapped in a heavy, oppressive darkness. Daniel lay awake in his bed, staring blindly at the ceiling, listening to the soft, rhythmic breathing of Clara sleeping peacefully beside him. She looked completely innocent, entirely untouched by the terrible, dark suspicions swirling violently in his mind.

He waited another thirty minutes to be absolutely certain she was deeply asleep. Then, moving with excruciating slowness, he slid out from under the heavy silk duvet. He didn't put on his slippers, terrified that the slightest noise on the hardwood floors would wake her. He crept out of the master bedroom and made his way down the long, shadowed corridor toward his mother’s room.

The heavy oak door was unlocked. Inside, Elena was asleep on the small cot in the corner, serving as a loyal guardian even in the darkest hours of the night. His mother was breathing shallowly, her frail chest rising and falling with labored, painful effort. Daniel bypassed the bed and went straight to the antique mahogany dresser. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small lock-picking tension wrench.

His hands were shaking violently as he inserted the metal tool into the brass keyhole of the top right drawer. He applied gentle pressure, listening intently for the mechanical click. It took three agonizing minutes, sweat pooling heavily on his forehead, before the lock finally gave way. He pulled the heavy wooden drawer open.

Inside, nestled among innocent-looking prescription bottles, was a small, heavy metal lockbox. Daniel felt a cold, paralyzing wave of dread wash over his entire body. Why would Clara keep a locked steel box hidden inside a locked drawer in a severely sick woman's room?

Suddenly, Elena shifted on her cot. She sat up abruptly, rubbing her tired eyes, and saw Daniel standing in the dark.

"Mr. Daniel?"

she whispered in utter confusion.

"Shh,"

May you like

Daniel hissed, pointing to the metal box in his hands.

"Elena, what is inside this?"
